SchenkelShultz Architecture announced it completed the master plan for the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority’s planned expansion. Above is their design for the Intermodal Hub. The hub will be sited south of the current terminal and runways, with a people mover connection back to the current A and B Terminal, and in the future will connect additional people movers from this hub to the planned south airside gate terminals. While new gates are not in the current construction plan, the master plan allows for 120 new gates, spread over a number of future airside terminals similar to the gate terminals in service today. The master plan allows OIA to one day double the current number of gates.
This intermodal transportation hub, the first phase of the expansion, is planned to accommodate three other passenger rail projects, including Central Florida’s commuter rail SunRail; the All Aboard Florida Miami-to-Orlando intercity train; and the planned magnetic-levitation train Maglev, set to connect to the Orange County Convention Center. The project indicates a new south drop-off and pick-up entry, and an adjacent new parking garage.
